What happens to the success of your business when you change your routine behaviour?
What is stopping you from changing a bad business habit into a good business habit today?
Research shows that when most people try to change a habit they make the effort to change for a while but sooner or later go back to previous routine.
Real and effective habit change is not easy, its requires discipline and hard work.
The thing is it can’t be easy, it needs to be hard!
Remember it’s as hard for your competition as it is for you.
Habit change by definition is a long change. Some research suggests it takes between 66 and 260 days to install a new habit over an old one successfully.
It is also important to remember that it is so easy to drift back to doing what you did before, whenever you turn up at work as usual, all the usual triggers/cues will prompt your usual routine and the same results too…
In his book The Power of Habit Change Charles Duhigg states
“A habit is a formula our brain automatically follows: when I see a CUE, I will perform a ROUTINE in order to get a REWARD. To re-engineer that formula, we need to begin making choices again”
He believes successful change can be better achieved when you put the habit wheel (see below) to work for you and your business.
If you manage your cues, you will be able to change your routine behaviour.
In time you can master the habit change you seek by recognising the three components of your habit loop and using your new-found awareness to stimulate your habit change.
BE WARNED: Old habits don’t die! They are waiting in the shadows happy to trip you up unless you stay vigilant, stay conscious, stay aware.
